FAQs

What does ‘hypoallergenic’ mean?
The term ‘hypoallergenic’ refers to ingredients and/or recipes which are less likely or have a decreased tendency to cause or provoke an allergic reaction.  The more common allergens are believed to be ingredients such as wheat, wheat gluten, dairy products, beef, pork, eggs and soya.

Although some ingredients are believed to be more likely to cause an allergic reaction, most, if not all, ingredients have the potential to cause an allergic reaction, if a particular dog is susceptible to that allergen.  Therefore, when stating a food is ‘hypoallergenic’ it is always necessary to state the reasons why e.g. hypoallergenic - formulated without wheat or wheat gluten.

What are Glucosamine, MSM and Chondroitin Sulphate?
Glucosamine is found in connective tissue such as cartilage.  Its function is to protect joints from damage by free radicals as well as stimulating the production of Chondroitin.

Chondroitin is produced in the body from Glucosamine.  As well as stimulating cells to produce more Collagen and Proteoglycan, it also inhibits destructive enzymes known to cause Osteoarthritis.

MSM donates Sulphur to connective tissues and is involved in hair, nail, skin and nerve structures.

What are essential fatty acids?
Linoleic (an Omega 6 fatty acid found in sources such as soya oil, sunflower oil and animal fats e.g. chicken oil and lamb fat) and Linoleic acids (an Omega 3 source found in sources such as linseed) are essential fatty acids, as the animal cannot synthesise these themselves.  Both Linoleic and Linoleic acid are considered essential in the cat and dog.

Although fats can contain fatty acids, they can be present in varying quantities.  For example, beef fat will have a very low percentage of fatty acids, whereas sunflower oil and fish oil will have much larger percentages.  Marine oils are good sources of other Omega 3 fatty acids - found in fish oilds and algae - such as DHA (Docosaphexaenoic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid).

Omega 3 fatty acids are thought to have beneficial effects which include reduced heart and circulatory disease, moderation of allergic responses and inflammation and participation in the mechanisms involved in the prevention of cancer.

Omega 6 fatty acids are metabolised into hormone-like eicosanoids (e.g. prostaglandin E-PGE) which promote swelling and inflammation.  Therefore, working synergistically, the Omega 3 & 6 oils are thought to reduce any inflammatory conditions.

Fatty acids have long been incorporated into the diets of dogs and cats to help improve a dull, dry coat.  However, more recently, it has been found that fatty acids play a important role in other areas of skin and coat health such as allergies, control of inflammation, joint health and the function of other organs.
