Why choose Headstart?
Headstart is a hypoallergenic, small kibble that is high in protein and includes Salmon Oil, containing Omega 3 & 6 essential fatty acids, which are believed to play a role in skin and coat condition, organ health, joint care and brain development.
It is a great value, complete diet for puppies with no added artificial colours or flavours. Headstart also contains MSM, Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulphate that are thought to aid in joint support and repair. Antioxidant vitamins and minerals are added to help support a healthy immune system, along with Yucca Schidigera extract, which may help reduce stool odour.
Puppies should be weaned at around 3.5 to 4 weeks of age - start by mixing the puppy food with gravy or warm water along with puppy milk replacer (not cows milk) to create a 'mush.' This should be fed 3 to 4 times a day. Each week gradually increase the amount of food and decrease the amount of liquid so that by approximately 7 weeks of age the puppies diet just consists of dry food.
Puppies should be fed 3 times daily up until they are 6 months of age, after this you can reduce their meals to twice daily. Small and medium breed dogs should then be fed twice daily until about 12 months of age. As the puppy gets older, gradually decrease the quantity of puppy food (using the Wuffitmix feeding guide as a guideline), until by 12 month of age the puppy is ready to be weaned onto adult food. When changing foods, make sure you do it gradually over a 7 to 10 day period so not to cause any digestive upset or soft stools.
If the puppy is a large or giant breed dog, they should be fed puppy food up until around 18 months (even up to 24 months in a giant breed dog). Again, as the puppy gets older, the feeding quantity should gradually be decreased (using the Wuffitmix feeding guide as a guideline), until the puppy reaches approximately 18 months of age, at which point the puppy can then gradually be weaned onto an adult food.
Choosing the right puppy food is extremely important as puppies grow 20 times faster than adult dogs and so requires a special diet to aid their physical development. A specially formulated puppy food is recommended which needs to be fed at evenly spaced intervals to avoid over stretching their small stomachs. A responsible breeder will have given you advice about puppy food before you collect your new pet and often give you some in their puppy pack.

It is better not to leave puppy food down (so throw away any uneaten food after 20 minutes) and do not to give your puppy any variety; this can cause problems with their digestion and also their toilet training regime. Do however, make sure that water is always available to your puppy, so never take its water bowl away.
There is a wide range of dry complete puppy food on the market and the quality varies widely. To get the best out of your puppy's development choose a puppy food specially designed for this life stage and buy the best you can afford. Premium dry puppy food such as Wuffitmix, tend to have the best quality ingredients. Wuffitmix Headstart is a hypoallergenic, wheat gluten free puppy food and contains 30% protein to give your puppy the best start in life.
Some puppies are not accustomed to complete dry puppy food immediately after weaning but will grow accustomed to them with time. If your puppy does not seem to like eating dry complete puppy food and this is what you wish to feed, try soaking the food in a little warm water to soften or mix in a little tinned puppy food, gradually reducing the quantity until he is fully weaned and accepts dry complete.
Some dogs appear to be sensitive or intolerant to certain ingredients and additives in puppy food and this can cause a variety of problems. Common symptoms include:
•Lethargy
•Aggressive or hyperactive behaviour
•Chronic skin and ear problems
•Light to mid-brown loose bulky stools and /or diarrhoea
•Bloating / Weight gain / Weight loss
Similar to children, the most common food intolerances appear to be colourings, sugars, wheat, milk and soya. We have therefore reformulated Headstart puppy food to be free from wheat, gluten, artificial colours and preservatives.

My labrador puppy Bessie was weaned by her breeder on Headstart, she is a picture of health and vitality, shiny coat, and boundless energy. She loves her Wuffits and empties her dish with great relish. It also boosts her immune system, since recently we had an outbreak of kennel cough locally, her housemate developed it, Bessie didnt even have a sniffle.
