The Shih Tzu is a playful and loyal companion and make excellent pets for children due to their fun nature.  They need plenty of grooming due to their long coat and regular trims at a groomers will be required.  Their smooth coat comes in a variety of colours such as gold, dark/light brown, white, black or a mixture of these. 

They are generally a healthy breed although watch out for eye infections.  They weight between 4.5 and 8kg and should not be any taller than 27cm at the withers.  These obedient little dogs are good with other animals and will adapt to most lifestyles.
