The Dog de Bordeaux is massive in size, with bitches weighing 45kg and dogs 50kg or more. The breed standard stipulates that dogs should measure 60 to 68cm at the shoulders and bitches 58 to 66cm. They are very muscular dogs with a distinctive wrinkled face and a fine, short coat.
Originally bred for hunting large animals and for fighting, the Dog de Bordeaux is suprisingly sweet natured and loyal. They are protective of their family and make excellent guard/watch dogs. The Breed Standard calls them "vigilant and courageous without aggression."
Their short coats are easy to maintain, a brush once or twice a week will suffice. The folds of skin do need regular wiping to avoid irritation or infection. A couple of walks a day will keep them fit and in good shape and they love nothing more than a good run around.
